SALT LAKE CITY –- The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA D-League affiliate of the NBA’s Utah Jazz, weren’t able to outlast the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in Wednesday night’s 116-105 defeat at Bruin Arena.
The game was close in all four quarters for the only meeting this season between the two teams and it wasn’t until the closing minutes of the final frame that the Mad Ants built a 13-point lead, their largest of the game. The Stars got to within two with under nine minutes remaining, but Fort Wayne’s 26-17 run to end the game would close the door on Salt Lake City’s comeback attempt.
Seven Stars finished in double-figures, led by Sundiata Gaines with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting with three 3-pointers made. Henry Sims turned in his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Brice Johnson, an affiliate player with the Los Angeles Clippers and a former University of North Carolina teammate with Stars guard Marcus Paige, contributed 11 points off the bench.
Six Mad Ants players scored in double-digits. Alex Poythress had a game-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting, while Trey McKinney-Jones chipped in 20 points.
