Erie, Pa. – The Erie BayHawks (12-29) overcame a 20-point deficit to defeat the Grand Rapids Drive (21-22), 117-111, in the second night of back-to-back contests. The win snaps Erie’s six-game losing streak.
The Drive jumped out to an early 11-point, 20-9, lead at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter. Grand Rapids was on fire in the first quarter of play, scoring 36 points on 15-25 (.600) shooting from the floor. At the end of one, Erie found itself in an 18-point hole, 36-18. The BayHawks opened up the second quarter on an 18-2 run, narrowing their deficit, 38-36. After cutting the Drive’s lead to two, Grand Rapids went into halftime with a 56-52 lead.
Grand Rapids started the second half on a 14-8 run to lead the BayHawks by double digits, 70-60. Erie ended the third on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 82 points heading into the final quarter of play. The BayHawks gained an 85-84 lead off of a TJ Price free throw at the 10:18 mark of the fourth quarter. It was Erie’s first lead since it held a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter. The BayHawks went up by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter. With 1:58 left to play in regulation, Erie held a slim two-point, 111-109, lead. Stefan Jankovic buried a triple to put the BayHawks up by five, 114-109, with 1:47 left to play. Erie won its 12th game of the season tonight, 117-111.
Kalin Lucas dropped a game-high 32 points , four rebounds and a game-high tying eight assists. Stefan Jankovic finished with 29 points and four rebounds in 31 minutes as a reserve. In his third start of the season, John Petrucelli notched 12 points on 5-8 (.625) shooting and a team-high tying six rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Over the last three quarters of tonight’s tilt, the BayHawks outscored the Drive 99-75 (+24).
Grand Rapids had three players score 20-plus points for the second straight contest. Ellenson connected on 10-17 (.588) shooting from the floor, including a 4-8 (.500) clip from deep, a game-high tying eight rebounds, four assists and one steal in 39 minutes.
