RENO, Nev. — The Reno Bighorns (21-29) defeated the Northern Arizona Suns (22-28) 124-116 Saturday night at the Reno Events Center in front of a sellout crowd.
Pe’Shon Howard led the Bighorns with 33 points and five rebounds while Isaiah Cousins had a near double-double with 25 points and seven assists. Reggie Hearn had 16 points and four rebounds. David Stockton scored 15 points and notched four assists.
Elijah Millsap paced the Suns with 38 points, 11 rebounds and four assists while Xavier Silas had 20 points and four rebounds.
The Bighorns dominated the first quarter winning the period 39-33. Reno opened the game on a 21-7 run holding a 16-point lead at the midway point. The Suns chipped away at their deficit heading into the second quarter trailing by six.
The teams kept the score close the first half of the second quarter with neither team leading by more than six points. The Bighorns kept their advantage over the Suns throughout the frame, opening up their lead to as many as 13 points. The Bighorns went into the locker room at the half leading 70-57.
The Suns gained momentum coming out of the break going on a 19-7 run edging the Bighorns by one at the 6:00 mark. After a three from Millsap, the Suns took control of the lead at the 3:51 mark making the score 81-78. The teams kept the score close the remainder of the quarter exchanging the lead three times in less than three minutes. Northern Arizona led by three points heading into the final quarter.
Reno retook control of the lead in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. The frame was a tightly contested battle. The teams found themselves knotted up at 115 at the 1:55 mark after seven lead changes and tying five times. The Bighorns went on a 7-2 run with .57 second left in play behind back-to-back triples from Howard and Luis Montero to preserve the lead the remainder of the game.
