Des Moines, Iowa — Terry Whisnant’s three-pointer at the buzzer missed long as the Iowa Energy (12-38) dropped their final game of the regular season, losing 118-115 to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (32-18) Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Matt Costello broke the Iowa Energy single-game record by hauling in 25 rebounds and 17 points in the loss. He broke Earl Barron’s record of 24 rebounds set in 2010 against the Erie BayHawks.
The game provided back-and-forth action throughout, with 22 total lead changes amongst the teams. The Vipers built a 14-point advantage early in the second quarter before the Energy closed the half on a 30-19 run, trailing 63-60 at the break.
The Energy continued their run into the third, leading by seven points at one point before the Vipers closed the gap. Neither team would lead by more than six points in the final quarter.
JaKarr Sampson recorded a career-high 36 points on 15-of-29 shooting from the field. It was the first time the St. John’s alum topped 30 points this season.
Former first-round D-League draft pick Quinton Chievous posted his fifth straight game scoring at least ten points, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Energy. Iowa shot 60.7 percent on two-point attempts but just 10-39 from deep.
Wes Washpun dished out a team-high seven assists and scored 16 points for the second straight game.
Terry Whisnant provided 12 points off the bench, all of which came from three-point baskets.
Isaiah Taylor led the Vipers with a game-high 33 points on 12-18 shooting from the floor, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining on the game. Former Grizzlies assignee Troy Williams finished with 23 points and seven rebounds in his return to Des Moines.
The Iowa Energy finished their 10th D-League season with a 12-38 record and will miss the playoffs for a third straight season.
