Record 30 Percent of Players on NBA Opening Day Rosters Have NBA D-League Experience

By Brian Kotloff | October 27, 2015

For the third straight year, NBA Opening Day rosters include a record number of players with NBA Development League experience.

The 132 NBA D-League alums across the 30 teams represent an all-time Opening Day high 30% of the 446 NBA players. That number has grown in each of the past four seasons and has more than doubled since 2010. A decade ago, just seventeen NBA players had NBA D-League experience.

More on the record-setting representation:

– This is the second season ever that has opened with every NBA team featuring at least one NBA D-League alum. (Last season was the first.)

– The Detroit Pistons feature a league-high eight alums, while the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors are next in line with six each.

– Many of the 132 alums are established NBA players for whom making the roster was a foregone conclusion. Others are making the cut for the first time. This year’s crop of underdog stories includes multi-year NBA D-League vets Seth Curry (Kings), JaMychal Green (Grizzlies), Willie Reed (Nets) and Jonathon Simmons (Spurs) — each of whom landed on an NBA roster to start the season for the first time.
